Tree Stand Height Deer

The ideal tree for hanging treestands is about 18 inches in diameter.
Tree stand height deer. My last trek. When standing on your platform with your back pressed against the tree you minimize your outline as deer approach. In some cases i ve hung stands 30 feet high to get myself sufficiently high to be above deer walking nearby on a ridge top or food plot. This clear benefit leads some hunters to hang stands 25 feet or higher.
For instance one of my favorite setups is a stand high in a downhill tree allowing me to shoot into a hillside holding a trail or ridge point deer frequent wind blowing into empty space behind my position. Hunt perfect deer not perfect trees. If you bowhunt the higher you go the smaller the vital area of a deer becomes. Maybe this is the reason i left behind climbing and lock on stands years ago to the youngster hunters.
But there are downsides to extreme heights too which we ll get to. Find the deer before the tree. Keep in mind the effective range of your weapon. Use those variables to determine your height along with a commitment to safety and common sense.
At the proving grounds topography can definitely affect stand placement. This size ensures the tree is sturdy enough to support your weight and wide enough to cover the width of your shoulders. In these cases my stand may be 50 feet above the ground but resulting shots only slightly downhill at 20 to 30 yards. An old man has no business going up 20 feet into a hunting stand that is clinging to a tree by a nylon strap.
Depending on whether i m shooting up or down a slope affects my stand height.
